At Prison Island, you will have the opportunity to see the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, peacocks, dik-dik (a species of small antelope), and the prison ruins, among other attractions.
An interesting fact about the Aldabra Giant Tortoise is that they can live for more than 200 years. The oldest tortoise at Prison Island is currently 200 years old, making them one of the world’s longest-living animals.
The prison ruins consist of a building that was erected in 1893 to serve as the Central Prison of Zanzibar. Construction began that same year, during a cholera epidemic in Egypt and shortly after a bubonic plague outbreak in Bombay. Since Zanzibar was the main port in East Africa, authorities decided that the prison and other buildings should be prepared as a quarantine station. This was to ensure proper control measures for vessels and their passengers, minimizing the risk of an epidemic in the Zanzibar Archipelago.
